Standard vs. fully custom playing card decks

Do you want your brand on the back of a regular deck, or a different design on every card? Here is how to decide.

The short answer

Choose a standard deck with your own back and box when the cards are meant to be played, such as a bar, club or brand deck where the faces should be familiar. Choose a fully custom deck when the cards are the content, as with a quiz, a training set, a product range or a game, because every one of up to 54 faces can be a different design at no setup charge. Get Custom Playing Cards prints both from 12 decks. See fully custom card decks.

When a standard deck is the right call

A custom poker deck uses the standard deck layout of 52 cards, 2 jokers and 2 extras, so it plays like any deck on the table, and your artwork carries the back and the box. It is printed on three-ply black-core stock with an embossed air-cushion finish, so it fans, riffles and cannot be read through a lamp. That makes it the natural choice for card rooms, clubs, bars and game nights, where a deck gets handled hard and the branding should be seen every time the cards are dealt.

When a fully custom deck is the right call

In a fully custom deck every face is your own artwork, up to 54 of them, and there is no per-design setup charge at any quantity, so fifty-four different cards are made the same way as fifty-four copies of one. A deck of that size suits a quiz, an onboarding pack, a product range, a set of prompts or a training tool, and the printed tuck box makes it something people keep on a desk. The one rule is the back: it must look the same upside down, or the deck is marked, as explained in why custom decks end up marked.

What stays the same either way

Both options use the same three-ply black-core stock and the same embossed finish, both can be ordered from 12 decks, and both follow the same path: a free vector redraw of your artwork, a free mockup within 24 hours, and finished decks in about 2 weeks after you approve. Fully custom decks can be cut to poker or bridge size. If you are unsure which size suits the game, the guide to poker size vs. bridge size covers it.

The verdict

Pick a standard deck with a custom back for cards that will be dealt and shuffled, where familiar faces matter.

Pick a fully custom deck when each card carries its own message, image or question.
